OUR FIRST TEACHER TREAT DAY!!!

For those that are new to Korematsu: For many years, our PTSA has honored our teachers and staff with a monthly luncheon.

This is the most-loved staff event that happens at the school.

PLEASE HELP SUPPORT OUR WONDERFUL SCHOOL BY CONTRIBUTING FOOD, FUNDS, OR TIME TO MAKE OUR LUNCHEONS A SUCCESS!

First Luncheon: Friday September 14th

What can you contribute?
Your favorite lunch item: Pizza, meat or veggie dishes, noodles, curries or casseroles, sushi, sandwiches, salads, vegetables, bread, cheese, desserts, cookies, pies, cake, fruit, nonalcoholic beverages, and more. Homemade, store-bought, take out, hot or cold, omnivore/herbivore/locavore, … ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING is gratefully received. Let us know on the signup sheet below.

You’d like to help but you can’t deliver food?

Drop cash or a check made out to Korematsu PTA at the front desk (in an envelope for PTA Teacher’s Lunch with your name on it)–or to the parents below–and we will buy food on your behalf.

Where/when should I drop it off?
Leave your contribution at the front desk in the morning when you drop your child off, or to the faculty lunch room before 11am. Food should be labeled (so we know what it contains) and wrapped or in containers. Be sure to pick up any dishes at the end of the day.

MIDDLE SCHOOL AGED GIRLS….. CHECK OUT SWE++

Unnamed 2The Society of Women Engineers at the University of California, Berkeley
Applications due September 10th at 11:59 PST.

SWE++, is a free 10 week program that will focus on introducing middle school girls to the world of computer science. Our applications are now LIVE at this link. If you have a middle schooler or know anyone who would be interested, please encourage them to apply!

We are looking for students who are passionate, dedicated, and ready to learn, and can commit to coming to class every Saturday morning from 10am-12pm at the UC Berkeley campus starting September 15th. We have an awesome curriculum set up and are super excited for our first batch of students, and we are looking forward to being part of our journey to close the gender gap in computer science.

We are looking forward to reading your students’ applications, which are due September 10th at 11:59 PST.

SWE++ aims to teach computer science concepts to middle school girls. The ratio of men to women in the technology space is very large, and we need more women in tech. Many girls, including ourselves, haven’t been exposed to computer science until much later in life, or we were actively discouraged to not pursue this field. We are here to make some changes and introduce your students to computer science at a younger age in a comfortable and supportive atmosphere.

Maitri, Rebecca, and I are very passionate about introducing more women into technology fields and reducing the gender gap. We’d like to introduce our curriculum to middle school girls so they can get a head start to what the world of computing looks like. This upcoming fall semester, we are going to be hosting around 30 middle schoolers at UC Berkeley. Ever Saturday morning from 10am-12pm (starting September 15-November 17) we will be teaching computer science concepts and working on projects. Our goal is to introduce the girls to CS, but also a community of other girls and mentors that your students can work with and learn from. Throughout the semester, we will have guest speakers and fun events as well. The very last session will be a “Code Day” which will consist of guest speakers, workshops on different areas of CS, and more! We are really looking forward to this upcoming semester!

A School Site Council is required by law, and is a very important volunteer position on campus. The School Site Council annually reviews and updates the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) including proposed expenditure of funds allocated to the school through the Consolidated Application. The SSC must approve the plan, recommend it to the local governing board for approval, monitor its implementation, and evaluate the effectiveness of the planned activities at least annually.

The School Site Council (SSC) is composed of a group that represents all segments of the school community for the common goal of supporting student success. The group is composed of the principal, teacher representatives, other staff representatives, parents/other community representatives, and student representatives at the secondary level, with each group selected by their peers.

Elections take place at the start of the school year. Since we have student representatives, our School Site Council tries to meet directly after school.

Unnamed 3

Singers & Families, please help spread the word (info. flyer).

Fall 2018 Glee Club (Choir) first class/rehearsal (“trial class”) happens Wednesday, August 29th, 1:35-2:25pm in Korematsu’s band room. [Thanks Ms. Carrico, band and music program director, for welcoming choir back for the Fall.]

Sign-ups are welcome up until enrollment closes on September 12th. By the 12th, we’ll finalize the roster and provide it to the BACR after school Program Site Director because, for safety, the program tracks which students are on campus during the after school hours (even those not registered with BACR). FYI also BACR would gladly include your student in their supper/meal program after school (working with BACR on this aspect).

So that Ms. Wu can focus her talents on teaching vocal music, Mary and I have stepped up for administrative and operational details. For Fall 2018, we’re looking for a couple of parents that can lend a hand, for example, we give Ms. Wu a lift from Madera every week so she can make it on time for class.

To secure your student’s spot for the Fall Session, submit $150 payment (15 class sessions) soonest (latest by 9/12) OR let us know your student will be on scholarship (or need a payment plan). With some families contributing to a scholarship fund, our goal is to cover whatever scholarships are needed, hopefully in full!

If you’re able to contribute towards a scholarship fund, whatever amount, please do.

Payment options:

Students can join our unit and have an active voice

and vote in determining the direction and actions of our Association.

By becoming a member, you show support for your community middle school, provide funds to the PTSA to pay for valuable programs on campus, and make your voice heard by attending and voting at PTSA meetings.  A large and active PTSA membership generally indicates a high level of parent and community involvement in the school.  We have a GREAT unit!  Last year, we were #1 in membership out of the  30+ schools that make up the Bayside Council of PTAs, and it has grown over 200% over the last five years!

KOREMATSU MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER BAND CAMP

KOREMATSU MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER BAND CAMP

MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT DUFFY LEADERSHIP CHANGE EL CERRITO HIGH SCHOOL

June 19, 2018

Dear ECHS Community,

I hope you are enjoying your summer break. I am writing to let you know that next year, there will be a new principal at El Cerrito High School. Edith Jordan-McCormick will be working in a different leadership position in the district. We will immediately undertake the process to select a new principal and I look forward to your participation in that process.

Meetings with parents, students and staff are scheduled for Monday, June 25th at ECHS. The staff meeting will take place at 4:30 pm in the library and a wider community meeting at 6 pm in the auditorium. If enough students are present, we will also make special time for them toward the end of the meeting.

These meetings will be specifically tailored around input regarding skills and competencies the community would be looking for in their next leader. The position will be posted on Wednesday and interviews will be planned for July 9 and July 10. The interview process will be community based, meaning that a few teachers, parents and community will be invited to participate in the process via stakeholder groups. Details of that process will be shared during the meetings and by email following the meeting.

Next year, El Cerrito High School will be supervised by two executive directors, Julio Franco and Anne Shin, as part of a shift to a Secondary Schools office to better support middle and high schools. Both of them are experienced principals and leaders in the District. You will have an opportunity to meet them later this summer.

The school is also hiring an additional vice principal. We will be interviewing for that position in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support and patience during these changes. I look forward to the continued success of the students and staff at El Cerrito High School.

In partnership,

Matthew Duffy
Superintendent

Matthew Duffy
Superintendente
