Another school year is round the corner. The Korematsu PTSA is here to help you navigate middle school. We also work closely with school administration to organize programs and events that support student success.

FIRST DAY!

School begins Monday, August 21st

First Bell rings at 8:10 a.m. It is a Minimum Day. School ends at 1:25 p.m.

SCHEDULES & ID’s

Schedules given out at orientation were draft schedules. There could be changes. There will be lists posted around the school and also adults standing around campus holdings lists, directing students to their first period class. Once they are in their first period class, they will get a copy of their official schedule. If a student was unable to come and get their ID picture taken prior to the first day of school, they need to go to class and we will make an announcement letting them know when they can come to get their ID. This will NOT be done on the first day.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

1. School ID on lanyard.
2. Class schedule and map of campus.
3. Sharpened pencils and erasers (mistakes OK!!).
4. Lunch or meal card or cash to purchase.
5. Binder with paper inside.
6. Backpack to hold it all!
7. Some returning students report they used a composition book for each class. You may need a 5-tab binder with pockets to hold handouts. Teachers will tell students what is required for class. If you buy ahead, save the receipt in case a teacher changes it up.
8. You do not change for P.E. on the first day.

DROP OFFS AND PICK UPS

Drop off and pick up students at the marked, designated areas on Norvell and Lawrence. Drive around the school in a clockwise direction. For student safety, and to improve traffic flow, drop students on the school side of the street. Please do not drop off students directly in front of the school on Donal Avenue. In the mornings and afternoons, Donal Avenue is used by AC Transit and other buses, therefore, it must be kept clear so that the buses can make their stops.

PARKING

There is no parking on the school side of Donal Avenue. The school side of Donal Avenue must be kept clear for AC Transit and other bus use. Please park legally on Lawrence, Gladys or Norvell Streets.

Please respect our neighborhood and our neighbors. Please do not park in front of and block driveways …. even for a minute … and always follow traffic rules and regulations.

AC Transit

AC Transit runs dedicated routes to and from Richmond. These routes run only on school days Monday to Friday and the schedules are timed to match the hours of local schools and operate only when schools are in session. Even though these buses are specific to school schedules, they are open to all passengers at regular fare. Find routes here! 667 668 675

MATH CLUB

Math Club is a lunchtime activity where students get help with homework, play games and solve puzzles, and earn extra credit and have fun with math!

Parent volunteers are warmly welcome and are needed to provide support (NO MATH KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY)! Contact: korematsuptsa@gmail.com and we will send you on to the proper people. Sponsored and paid for by your PTSA.

AFTER SCHOOL MATH TUTORING

Start Date TBD
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
Hours: Mon 2:30-3:30 Tues 2:30-3:30 Thurs 2:30-3:30. Wednesday and other minimum days 1:30-2:30.

This after school hour is open to anyone in our community that needs help with math. Parents and guardians of Korematsu students are welcome to attend too! Just bring any math work you need help with or any math questions you might have. No appointment necessary, but students are expected to abide by regular classroom behavior expectations or they will be asked to leave. Room A201.

WriterCoach Connection

Become a WriterCoach Connection volunteer at Korematsu Middle School; get an inside look into middle school and feel good about strengthening public education in El Cerrito. KMS is on the upswing thanks to wonderful parents, community support, dedicated principals and teachers, a state-of-the art new campus and being a pilot program for many new innovative and exclusive programs.

WriterCoach Connection brings teams of trained volunteers to help students one-on-one with their classroom writing assignments. We provide all the training you’ll need to be a terrific coach. To reach our goal of one-one-one coaching (where the magic happens) we need 10 more coaches to start training. Please check out this two minute compelling video!

KOREMATSU MATH CLUB

LOVE TO SING?

FABULOUS! FREE! MUSIC! OPEN TO ALL! FREE CONCERT BY ECHS BAND – SUNDAY, AUGUST 13

Dear Band Families,

I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to attended my graduate conducting recital on Sunday, August 13th at 2pm in the ECHS Theater. This summer I will be completing my coursework for a master’s degree in music and in keeping with my instrumental conducting focus, my culminating project is graduate conducting recital. The event is FREE and in right in our backyard!

The programming is intended to show the versatility of music written for the wind ensemble. It includes the “Allegro” from Mozart’s Serenade No. 12 in C Minor, K338 (woodwind octet); Gabrieli’s Sonata Pian’e Forte (for two brass choirs); movements I and IV of Gounod’s Petite Symphonie in B flat (for nine wind instruments); and Sousa’s Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (for full wind ensemble). The program is short (around 35-45 minutes) and will be featuring current and former ECHS band students, which makes the recital even more special for me!

There will be a reception immediately following the recital sponsored by the Friends of El Cerrito Music. It would mean a lot to have you all in attendance and hope you’ll consider being there. If you plan on attending please let me know by responding to this email (to help with planning of the reception).

FREE SOCCER REFEREE COURSE

The Alameda-Contra Costa Youth Soccer League (ACCYSL) is offering its only referee training course of the summer on August 25-27 at the Blue Barn (4th St. and Harrison) in Berkeley. The class is free to all members of ACCYSL soccer clubs (Mavericks, Mersey, Richmond United, San Pablo United).

Participants in the class need to be 13 years-old or older.

By becoming a member, you show support for your community middle school, provide funds to the PTSA to pay for valuable programs on campus, and make your voice heard by attending and voting at PTSA meetings.

You don’t need to be a PTSA member in order to make donations or volunteer your skills. However, a large and active PTSA membership helps significantly when we apply for grants and other outside support and generally indicates a high level of parent and community involvement in the school.

We have a GREAT unit! Routinely, our membership ranks in the top five of the 31 schools that make up the Bayside Council of PTAs, our parent organization, and it has grown about 25% over the last three years!

Korematsu will have a new after-school drama program this year! Ms. La Due is looking for interested parent volunteers to help, especially with costumes and sets. To start things off, she is looking for parents who are available to come in and help sort through and organize old costumes and props on Wednesday, August 16th at 10am. The Richmond Museum of History is hosting a FAMILY FREE DAY on Saturday, September 2, 2017 in honor of Back to School season! FREE DEBATE CAMP

JULY 31 TO AUGUST 4, LANEY COLLEGE

My name is Mya Whitaker and I am the program director for the Bay Area Urban Debate League. Last year BAUDL expanded to serve WCCUSD, starting policy debate teams at Richmond and Kennedy High School. With the success of these teams, Richmond winning the entire Novice division for 2017, we would like to invite more of Richmond to our annual debate camp. This is year 10 of us hosting the Julia Burke Debate Camp.

Julia Burke Debate camp is hosted July 31st- August 4th at Laney College from 9am-4pm. Camp is free for WCCUSD youth ages 6th-12th grade. We provide FREE breakfast and lunch, as well as reimburse students for their travels.At debate camp we teach students the foundation of debate, as well as help them prepare for the upcoming season with us. We would like to come to any events your office is hosting this summer to bring more awareness to your community.

JOIN THE CONGRESSIONAL APP CHALLENGE!

Are you a young programmer? Do you live in the 11th Congressional District? Read on from Rep. Mark DeSaulnier!

The challenge will run from July 26, 2017 to November 1, 2017. All eligible high school students who live or attend school in California’s 11th Congressional District are invited to design, create, and submit their own software application for any platform (mobile, web, desktop, etc.).

Below is a summary of the Congressional App Challenge Rules:
Students may compete as individuals or in teams of up to four.
Submissions must be original, and created within one calendar year of the closing of the submission period.
Students entering the competition must submit a short video demonstration explaining their app and a completed questionnaire online by 12:00 p.m. EST on November 1, 2017.
Submissions will be judged by a panel of local judges who work within the academic, software, and entrepreneurial fields. The winning app will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol exhibit and featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website.
Established in 2013 by Members of Congress, this competition is intended to engage students’ creativity and encourage participation in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. By recognizing our nation’s young programming talent, we hope to highlight the growing importance of these skills to the future of our country.

My name is Mya Whitaker and I am the program director for the Bay Area Urban Debate League. Last year BAUDL expanded to serve WCCUSD, starting policy debate teams at Richmond and Kennedy High School. With the success of these teams, Richmond winning the entire Novice division for 2017, we would like to invite more of Richmond to our annual debate camp. This is year 10 of us hosting the Julia Burke Debate Camp.

Julia Burke Debate camp is hosted July 31st- August 4th at Laney College from 9am-4pm. Camp is free for WCCUSD youth ages 6th-12th grade. We provide FREE breakfast and lunch, as well as reimburse students for their travels.At debate camp we teach students the foundation of debate, as well as help them prepare for the upcoming season with us. We would like to come to any events your office is hosting this summer to bring more awareness to your community.

East Richmond Heights – Rolls Out First-Ever Art & Music Fest: July 16

If you hear the sound of a steam train toot-tooting in the vicinity of East Richmond Heights this Sunday, it’s not your imagination. It’s just the star attraction of the hillside neighborhood’s first-ever festival, well, letting off a little steam.

This Sunday, July 16, 2017, will mark the “1st Annual East Richmond Heights Art & Music Festival,” a free, family-friendly festival with tons of fun on the day’s roster. Set to run from 12-6 p.m., the event will naturally feature art and music, as well as baked goods/food items, drinks and rides on a mini steam train for the littles.

Adding to the event’s allure is its singularly unique locale: It will be staged against the beautiful backdrop of the neighborhood’s resident Buddhist monastery, the Gyuto Foundation, on Bernhard Avenue between Cypress and Elm Streets in East Richmond Heights.

And the BEST part? All festival proceeds will benefit Mira Vista School’s art and music programs and also the “Save the Elm Street Oak” project.

According to East Richmond Heights’ neighborhood/event organizer Natalie Kniess in an email correspondence, “We have over 15 performing artists and our list of exhibitors keeps growing; I expect [the] roster to be around 30 exhibitors.”

Per Kniess, performing artists currently slated to appear at the festival include the Mira Vista School Glee Club, The Elm Street Blues Band, Dave Ridnell, Pete Madsen, Jenny Jup Benorden, Turpentine Remedy, Steve Gibson Band, Matthew Heulitt, Eli De Yoe, Balianese Gamelan Musicians, Jan & Mike, The Ghost Kings and The Secret Identities.

Exhibiting artists representing a variety of mediums who will be selling their creations at the festival will include Ross Holzman, Mike Chavez, Jr., Chico Coelho, Gary Becker, Ugandan Artists, Rebeca Gonzalez, Mark Conrad, Alex James, Johanna & Amanda, A&J Jewels, John Moore and Linda Ruiz-Lozito.

Festival organizers are still on the lookout for volunteers willing to work at the event and/or participate in it in one way or another. Those interested in pitching in can access the volunteer sign-up list here.

RICHMOND|OAKLAND EAST BAY SYMPHONY & INDEPENDENCE EVE FIREWORKS

Another excellent option for third of July fun is at Richmond’s Craneway Pavilion. Located at 1414 Harbour Way South—nearby Marina Bay Park—the pavilion’s waterfront locale makes it another ideal spot for taking in the City of Richmond’s fireworks while listening to musical accompaniment by the Oakland East Bay Symphony. ARE YOU A BUDDING FILMMAKER?

Richmond’s RYSE Youth Center is calling on young filmmakers between the ages of 13-24 to submit their work to its 2017 Film Festival with the theme, “Truth be Told: Justice Through My Eyes.” The deadline for entering film submissions is Sept. 15, 2017.

According to festival organizers on RYSE’s website, “It was created to highlight and empower youth voices and visions through film” with the aim of “[engaging] 13-24 year olds in social justice issues.”

Young filmmakers are encouraged to submit films with themes focusing on a variety of topics including: Gender equity/equality, human rights, food justice, education, economic justice, criminal legal system, environmental issues, immigration, worker rights and other similar topics.

Festival guidelines dictate that film submissions should be 12 minutes or less, with RYSE recommending eight minutes in length.

Per RYSE, shorts can be submitted in the following categories: Documentary; narrative; music video; and animation and experimental.

According to the organization, successful films designated “official selection” will debut to the public in Oct. 2017 during the film festival at a location (TBD) somewhere in Richmond, CA. A panel of media industry and social justice judges will select the winners, as will a viewers’ choice award.

Certificates will be awarded in each age group for “Best Narrative Short,” “Best Documentary,” “Best Music Video” and “Best Experimental.”

The Truth be Told festival will award a “Grand Prize” of $275, a “Runner Up Award” of $175 and a “People’s Choice” prize of $100.

“For Richmond enthusiastically encourages Richmond’s youth to cease this excellent opportunity to share their voices,” said For Richmond Executive Director Kyra Worthy re: RYSE’s film fest. “Film is a powerful medium that is only intensified when seen through the prism of social justice. We eagerly await the opportunity to view our youth’s films on the important topics at hand.”

NATURE AND ENVIRONMENT DAY CAMP

JULY 31 TO AUGUST 4
9:00am – 3:00pm @ Camp Herms
1100 James Place, El Cerrito CA

Open to: Boy Scouts | Venture Scouts | Adult Leaders (not a Cub Scout event)
Event Cost: $325 per participant

The day camp is centered at Camp Herms and nearby East Bay Regional Park lands. Participants will investigate the Wildcat Creek watershed and see for themselves how biotic and abiotic forces shape and change the watershed’s ecology. This is an in depth and hands-on way to learn from expert University of California instructors how ecological science is done.

Participants will study insects, birds, grasses, water courses, micro-climates, and so much more.

Motivated participants can complete most of requirements for the Nature, Soil and Water Conservation and the Environmental Science merit badges, and for the coveted World Scout Environment Badge.

Participants will be responsible for their own meals. Camping facilities are available for the week at Camp Herms for groups with BSA approved adult leadership. Merit badge work may be completed with approved counselors from 3-5:00 with a $50/week fee.

BE FABULOUS! THE FAB LAB IS OPEN! COME VISIT!

Richmond Fab Lab at Kennedy High, 4300 Cutting Blvd.

A Fab Lab (or fabrication laboratory) is a small-scale workshop offering personal digital fabrication – true project-based learning! Community members as well as students and teachers can create new products using fab lab equipment. Fab Labs are equipped with an array of flexible computer controlled tools and various materials, with the aim to make “almost anything”.
The Fab Lab program was started in the Media Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a collaboration between the Grassroots Invention Group and the Center for Bits and Atoms, broadly exploring how a community can be powered by technology at the grassroots level. The fab lab concept also grew out of a popular class at MIT named “How To Make (Almost) Anything.”

Fab labs have spread from inner-city Boston to rural India, from South Africa to the North of Norway, and now to WCCUSD. Activities in fab labs range from technological empowerment to peer-to-peer project-based technical training to local problem-solving, to small-scale high-tech business incubation to grass-roots research. Projects being developed and produced in fab labs include solar and wind-powered turbines, thin-client computers and wireless data networks, analytical instrumentation for agriculture and healthcare, custom housing, and rapid-prototyping of machines.

WCCUSD is the first public school system on the West Coast to develop a Fab Lab. The establishment of Fab Lab Richmond has been funded by a generous grant from Chevron to the Fab Foundation. The Fab Lab is housed at Kennedy High School. More info here! https://www.wccusd.net/fablab

CAAM SEEKS MUSLIM AMERICAN YOUTH PARTICIPANTS FOR THE MUSLIM YOUTH VOICES SUMMER WORKSHOPS

San Francisco-based Center for Asian American Media is now accepting applications from Muslim American youth (ages 12-18) for our free Muslim Youth Voices Project (MYVP) summer filmmaking workshops. The workshops will be led by Sundance Award-winning filmmaker Musa Syeed and will be held in Dallas, Texas (July 20-26, 2017) and in Portland, Oregon (July 30-August 5, 2017). Apply by June 24, 2017. Applicants will be notified in the first week of July. Muslim Youth Voices Project is CAAM’s national initiative that supports media making from a new generation of storytellers. On behalf of the PTSA, I’d like to thank every member of our community for making this year a fantastic learning year. As a PTSA, we are thriving and growing every year. In everything we do, we try to support the students, teachers, and staff. This year, we continue to work on three main areas — support for academics, support for teachers, and support for student and community engagement.

Thanks to your time, energy, and financial contributions, the school was also able to accomplish a few firsts this year — send our students to the National History Day Contest, hold a Rights + Respect Week, fund a field trip to Great America on Math & Physics Day, organize a weeklong College and Career event, start a support group for girls, coordinate an art show, open the library after school, and more.

At the heart of it all is our spirit of community and inclusiveness. We always make sure our programs are available and welcoming to everyone. We hope that you will get involved next year.

ROSIE’S GIRLS SUMMER CAMP FOR GIRLS 6TH TO 8TH GRADE: APPLY ASAP

Rosie’s Girls is a six-week summer camp for girls entering sixth through eighth grades that runs from June 12 to July 22, 2017, in Richmond and includes a four-day overnight trip to Yosemite National Park. Girls who live or attend school in Richmond are eligible to apply.

Rosie’s Girls challenges girls by engaging them in “non-traditional” hands-on, career-exploration activities such as carpentry, welding, police work, engineering and other skilled jobs.

During the camp’s Career Day, participating girls are afforded the opportunity to explore a variety of job roles. In doing so, per officials, they learn to take risks and to thrive and excel in areas that they may have never thought possible—all the while exploring inner dreams, engaging in teamwork, building confidence and learning to envision a bright and productive future.

Those interested in applying to the camp should go to the EM Downer YMCA, 263 South 20th Street, Richmond, ASAP to fill one out.Applications are available in English and Spanish.

BUILD YOUR BRAIN: CCC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

The Contra Costa County Library invites children, teens and library users of all ages to take part in Summer Reading. The program is the Library’s yearly effort to keep kids reading during the summer months, preventing “brain drain.” Summer Reading begins on Monday, June 5 and runs through Saturday, August 5, 2017.

This year’s theme is “Build Your Brain” and the program is filled with activities, events and reading lists designed to exercise your brain. Reading and learning new skills help to challenge your brain and is required for good brain health.
Readers of all ages can participate online or use a paper reading record. Completed reading records or online completion certificates should be returned to one of the 26 Contra Costa County Library branches by Saturday, August 5. All finishers will receive a book prize and be entered into a drawing for a chance to win additional prizes.

Raffle prizes include: GoPro Hero5 4K, Fuji Instant Flix, Polaroid Mobile Zip Printer, Fitbit, San Francisco Giants tickets, board games, Lego sets, and more.

Point Richmond Music’s 16th Annual Summer Concert Series: FREE

Friday, June 9th will usher in the return of the popular summertime, street-wide concert series with two Richmond-grown musical acts: Tia Carroll & Her Awesome Blues Band (blues, from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.) and Andre Thierry (zydeco/accordion soul, 6:45 – 8:00 p.m.).

The concerts will convene at the corner of Park Place and Washington Avenue in downtown Point Richmond—as will the rest of the performances throughout the summer for the Friday night concert series.

Other musical acts lined up this summer for the concert series include Howell Devine (blues) and Second Line (funk) July 14; Delta Wires (blues) and Bicicletas por la Paz (Latin) Aug. 11; Evie Ladin Bank (neo-folk) and Lucky Losers Sept. 8; and Sang Matiz (Latin) and Pangea Futbol Club (Latin) Sept. 22.
