PTSA MEETING FEATURING SPECIAL SESSION “LOOKING AHEAD: WHAT TO EXPECT AT ECHS” AND BAND PARENTS MEETING

TUESDAY, MARCH 14

The PTSA will meet at 7 PM in the Multipurpose Room. After covering PTSA business, we will hold a session on ECHS, along the lines of “what to expect,” which is specially designed to help 8th graders and their families navigate their way through the first few months of high school. This year, ECHS Principal Edith Jordan-McCormick and Assistant Principal Jay Eirvin will be on hand to talk about academic and administrative matters, as well as extra curricular programs at the high school.

Learn also about what it’s like to be a Gaucho from our panel of student speakers.

So come with questions and get your answers.

Preceding the PTSA meeting is the Band Parents meeting in the band room, starting at 6 PM.

El Cerrito High School will host parent tours every third Thursday of the month the next two months. The tours will be from 9 to 11 AM. The tour will start with a question and answer period with Principal McCormick and end with classroom visits lead by Leadership students. Please check in at the main office. Thanks to the judges who put in many hours of work evaluating science posters this year. RIGHTS + RESPECT WEEK

Last week, students learned more about the work of Fred Korematsu and other civil rights activists from a special assembly as well as an exhibit on Fred’s work; gained an opportunity to follow other students’ thoughts on the cultural value of respect from the three Walls of Respect; and given a chance to sit through lunchtime screenings of documentaries on civil rights efforts. Our students and school are fortunate to have the generous support of:

— Authors Laura Atkins and Stan Yogi, who gave a splendid presentation on the Fred Korematsu story, with readings from their new book “Korematsu Speaks Up” ;

— Sakura Kai Taiko group who performed with energy and purpose;

— Toru Saito, a survivor of Japanese internment during the second world war, for his relevant perspective and heartfelt performance;

— Ms. La Due and Ms. Bogie for introducing the participants during the assembly;

— Chris Sterba, who put together the exhibit on Fred Korematsu;

— Korematsu Institute, for making documents and photos available;

— Janice Staubus Wallis, who helped with the Walls of Respect;

— Kazue Nakahara, for her friendly advice;

— Southern Poverty Law Center for the videos;

Next week is the PTSA-sponsored Rights + Respect Week. It is time where students can ponder and discuss the breakthroughs and setbacks in the progression of civil rights in this country, as well as contemplate respect as a cultural value. Events during this week include:

~ Fred T. Korematsu Tribute on Korematsu Day – Monday, Jan. 30

Who is Fred T. Korematsu? On Jan. 30, which is Korematsu’s birthday, learn about his achievements in advancing civil rights. A special exhibit in the MPR will reveal the story of the man behind the name.

~ Korematsu Assembly – Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, 2nd and 3rd Periods

Authors Laura Atkins and Stan Yogi present their new book “Korematsu Speaks Up.” Joining them are Japanese internment survivor Toru Saito, the Sakura Kai Senior Center taiko group, and the winner of Korematsu speech contest. Wear KMS colors — red and gold.

~ Three Walls of Respect – All Week

Students recently wrote a few things about what respect means to them. Follow their thoughts on this important cultural value on the Three Walls of Respect in the school hallways.

~ Films on Civil Rights – All Week

Reflect on the efforts of civil rights activists. The films will be screened in the MPR during seventh and eighth grade lunch periods.

–Lobby Help…watch bathroom traffic and sell latelings tickets
–Backpack watch…supervise use/access of backpacks, esp at beginning & end of dance
–Pizza…take raffle ticket from student and exchange w/pizza slice
–Refreshments…help keep drink/snack table from being too messy

IMPORTANT INFO ON PSAT 8/9 SCORE AND MORE!

college-board-logoEvery October, students in 8th and 9th grades take the PSAT 8/9. This is a standardized test that measures students’ college and career readiness as they enter high school. The test is taken at school.

The PSAT 8/9 serves as a warm-up to the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) taken at high school. The PSAT/NQSMT itself is a precursor to the SAT, a college-entrance exam that measures student aptitude in reading, writing and math, and optional subjects of science, history and languages.

At Korematsu, every 8th grade student will be able to view his or her PSAT 8/9 score with the assigned 8th grade counselor during the counselor classroom visit, which this year will take place in the last week of January during Math class.

During this visit students will:
a) Receive an Individual Score Report booklet that will provide a personal access code that is required to retrieve the PSAT scores online through the College Board website;
b) Be shown how to create a Khan Academy account at https://www.khanacademy.org/sat . This resource can also be used to prepare for PSAT/NSQMT, a warm-up to the SAT, which will be administered in high school;
c) Guided to visit bigfuture.org to learn more about careers and college majors.

How to Access the PSAT 8/9 Scores Online
1. Go to collegeboard.org
2. Click on “Sign Up” to create a College Board account

* However, the College Board currently does not collect personal information for students under the age of 13. PSAT 8/9 test takers under 13 can review their results on the paper score report or can review their scores in school with their counselor (see above).
3. Once you have created an account, log in with your username and password.
4. If you don’t see your scores on your dashboard after logging in, click the Add Score(s) button and use the access code that is shared with you by your counselor during the counselor classroom visit.
5. Click on PSAT 8/9
6. Click on “Get Your Scores.” Once your account is linked to your scores, it will look something like this:

During the 2014-15 school year, our district started a partnership with BrightBytes, an educational software company in order to learn more about our technology use for student learning. Our goal is to gather data on a continuing basis regarding technology access and skills, and on our district’s technology environment, in order to understand the connection between technology use and student achievement.

To gain these insights, we provide BrightBytes with a complete picture of technology use at school and at home within our district. Students, teach ers, and parents are asked to complete an online questionnaire twice a year to help us gather this data.

Your participation and support is important to us and will give us a more complete understanding of our district’s technology use. Our first step is to gather data from you, the members of our parent community.

WRITER COACHES NEEDED FOR SPRING SEMESTER

Looking for a volunteer opportunity to be more involved in the ECHS community? WriterCoach Connection (WCC) is a rewarding experience working one-on-one with students at every level of writing ability on their English writing assignments. In partnership with teachers, trained writer coaches help students strengthen their writing and critical thinking skills by giving them constructive feedback, challenging them to think more deeply, and building their confidence as writers. The time commitment is only one class period, two to three times per month. All coaching takes place during the school day.

You don’t need to be a writer or teacher — WCC coaches are parents, guardians, college students, working and retired people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and ages. Our in-depth training will give you strategies and practice to work effectively with students, including your own. If you are unable to coach right now, please tell a friend or neighbor who might be interested.

WRITER COACHES NEEDED FOR SPRING SEMESTER
Looking for a volunteer opportunity to be more involved in the ECHS community? WriterCoach Connection (WCC) is a rewarding experience working one-on-one with students at every level of writing ability on their English writing assignments. In partnership with teachers, trained writer coaches help students strengthen their writing and critical thinking skills by giving them constructive feedback, challenging them to think more deeply, and building their confidence as writers. The time commitment is only one class period, two to three times per month. All coaching takes place during the school day.

You don’t need to be a writer or teacher — WCC coaches are parents, guardians, college students, working and retired people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and ages. Our in-depth training will give you strategies and practice to work effectively with students, including your own. If you are unable to coach right now, please tell a friend or neighbor who might be interested.

FRED T. KOREMATSU SPEECH CONTEST

SUBMISSIONS DUE AT KOREMATSU MAIN OFFICE BY FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16

All students are invited to participate in the Fred T. Korematsu Speech Contest, which is organized by the Korematsu Institute as part of the Fred T. Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution celebration. This special day is celebrated every January 30th on Mr. Korematsu’s birthday. On this day, schools across the state are encouraged to remember the life of Fred Korematsu and recognize the importance of preserving civil liberties.

This year’s speech contest question is: How has Fred Korematsu’s quote, “Stand Up for What is Right,” influenced you in your life? How does this relate to current events today?

The speech must be 3-5 minutes in length. The finalist will present the speech at the Fred T. Korematsu Day event in San Francisco on January 29th.

SAVE THE DATE: ENGLISH NIGHT, NOV. 30, TIME TBD

Message from English Department:

At the Korematsu English Night, we will briefly cover the Common Core ELA standards and talk about how we are helping our students meet those standards in 7th and 8th grade. We will then turn our attention to a Common Core-aligned writing rubric and take a look at actual (anonymous) student writing samples. Parents will get a chance to practice scoring short essay responses with the rubric. Parents should leave at the end of the evening with a better understanding of how to help their students improve their writing!

 

HISTORY COMPETITION AT KOREMATSU: DEC. 12-16

The Korematsu History Department is making history! This year, for the very first time, Korematsu will join the National History Day Competition. The theme narrative is “Taking a Stand in History.” Korematsu students are invited to participate in the competition, which will be held school-wide from December 12 to 16. Projects can be turned in under the following formats:

Paper — individual effort

Documentary — individual or group effort (up to 5 students)

Website (Using Weebly) — individual or group effort (up to 5 students)

Performance — individual or group effort (up to 5 students)

Display Board— individual or group effort (up to 5 students)
