KOREMATSU RIGHTS + RESPECT WEEK
JANUARY 30 TO FEBRUARY 3
Next week is the PTSA-sponsored Rights + Respect Week. It is time where students can ponder and discuss the breakthroughs and setbacks in the progression of civil rights in this country, as well as contemplate respect as a cultural value. Events during this week include:
~ Fred T. Korematsu Tribute on Korematsu Day – Monday, Jan. 30
Who is Fred T. Korematsu? On Jan. 30, which is Korematsu’s birthday, learn about his achievements in advancing civil rights. A special exhibit in the MPR will reveal the story of the man behind the name.
~ Korematsu Assembly – Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, 2nd and 3rd Periods
Authors Laura Atkins and Stan Yogi present their new book “Korematsu Speaks Up.” Joining them are Japanese internment survivor Toru Saito, the Sakura Kai Senior Center taiko group, and the winner of Korematsu speech contest. Wear KMS colors — red and gold.
~ Three Walls of Respect – All Week
Students recently wrote a few things about what respect means to them. Follow their thoughts on this important cultural value on the Three Walls of Respect in the school hallways.
~ Films on Civil Rights – All Week
Reflect on the efforts of civil rights activists. The films will be screened in the MPR during seventh and eighth grade lunch periods.
~ National History Day Showcase – February 2, C 212 (Mr. U’s Room), 5 to 6 PM. (More info below)
URGENT APPEAL: VOLUNTEER AT GOLDEN GATE FIELDS

This is a fun-raiser! Mark off a few hours for us on that day and come down to Golden Gate Fields and work Dollar Days. We serve hot dogs and beer, (and sneak off to place a few bets). Your PTSA earns $1,000 + tips. It is fun! Really!

Valentine’s Day Dance, Tuesday, February 14, 2:30-4PM, MPR
Tickets sold 2/9 through 2/14. Must have ID and signed permission slip to purchase ticket. Permission slips available in office or in Ms. Renee’s room A221 starting in February. Prices: 2/9=$2; 2/10=$2.50; 2/13=$3; 2/14=$4…and $5 @ the door.
Adult Chaperones are needed and welcome. Here are jobs available:
–Lobby Help…watch bathroom traffic and sell latelings tickets
–Backpack watch…supervise use/access of backpacks, esp at beginning & end of dance
–Pizza…take raffle ticket from student and exchange w/pizza slice
–Refreshments…help keep drink/snack table from being too messy

We also welcome any contributions of red/pink/white decorations for the dance. They can be dropped off at the office or at Ms. Renee’s room A221. AND…we could use 2-3 adult helpers to come decorate with about a dozen kids period 7 on the day of the dance, Feb. 14th.1:35-2:25PM. Contact Ms. Renee.
Candy Grams–Sold at lunctime in MPR Wed. Feb 8th-13th and Distributed period 7 at the end of the class period. Items sold: Bag of Chocolate Kisses, or Heart-Shaped Stress Ball, or Chocolate Rose $1.50 each. Student should find out their friends’ last period room number or teacher. Any adult who’d like to help distribute these to teachers on Feb. 14th would be welcome. Let Ms. Renee know.

The Korematsu Jazz Ensemble scored Excellent in every category in last week’s California Music Educators Association festival and competition in Walnut Creek.

SEVENTH ANNUAL FRED T. KOREMATSU DAY OF CIVIL LIBERTIES AND THE CONSTITUTION EVENT, “STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT”

The Fred T. Korematsu Institute presents the 7th Annual Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution event, “Stand Up For What Is Right”. Commerating the 75th Anniversary of Executive Order 9066 that authorized the forced removal and mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII. Our topic this year is “Mass Incarceration Across Communitites: What’s Next?” Featured guest speakers include Alicia Garza, Co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter; Farhana Khera, Executive Director of Muslim Advocates; Jeff Adachi, San Francisco Public Defender and documentary filmmaker, and David Ono, anchor ABC7 News, Los Angeles who will be our MC. Also, performances from spoken word group, Young, Gifted & Black; rapper, spoken word artist and music by Ruby Ibarra; Cal Raijin Taiko of UC Berkeley, the Fred T. Korematsu Middle School speech contest winner, and including other special guests.

ECHS will host its third annual Jazz Festival featuring high school jazz programs throughout the Bay Area. The festival include workshops, master classes, clinics, and adjudicated performances. The culminating event will be an evening concert with the Donny McCaslin group at 7pm. Evening concert is $15 which includes festival all day pass. Festival only passes are $10.
