School is closed for LABOR DAY. Classes resume Tuesday, September 5, at 8:05 a.m.

PICTURE DAY IS FRIDAY!!!

Picture Day is Friday, Sept. 1, during PE classes. Students will check in at their PE class and then be led by their PE teacher to the A building lobby where the pictures will be taken.

IMPORTANT SCHOOL OFFICE REMINDERS

> Reminder to students: walk on the right side of the hall; throw trash in the trash cans; eating outside the MPR is not allowed.

> Reminder to parents: please drop off your students by the first bell. Students more than 5 minutes late must report to the main office and will receive detention.

> Schedule changes – We are still balancing classes and students may have their schedules changed.

> ID’s – If students have not obtained an ID yet they can stop by the office at lunch time to get one. The school will start to enforce the ID rule soon so students must make sure they have one.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: LIBRARY RATS (READING AND TECHNOLOGY STARS)

Ms. Bogie’s LibraryRATS Club is coming back! Starts Tuesday, September 19, from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. In that hour, club members will play games and work on book projects, as well as technology and engineering-related projects (e.g. building circuits). The club is open to ALL students. Interested students must register with Ms. Bogie at the library.

The library will also have after-school hours, starting Monday, Sept. 11.

FREE ON-CAMPUS AFTER SCHOOL MATH TUTORING IS HAPPENING NOW

The sessions for all grades will take place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, in Room A201. Hours: Mon 2:30-3:30 Tues 2:30-3:30 Thurs 2:30-3:30. Wednesday and other minimum days 1:30-2:30. Come with math questions and math tutor Brad will help your student figure them out! Students are expected to abide by regular classroom behavior expectations or will be asked to leave. Sponsored and funded by the Korematsu PTSA.

Let’s thank our teachers and staff for all the hard work they’ve put in to get school ready for our kids. Teacher Luncheons take place on the second Friday in most months in the Teacher’s Lounge (Room A220). Families participate by contributing dishes to the luncheon.

The first Teacher Luncheon, themed “Back-to-School! Easy-peasy, favorite go-to dishes,” is on Friday, September 8th. Bring your salads or stews. If it is pizza or sandwiches, bring it on! .. While there’s a theme, it’s always loose, and you should contribute dishes that suit your schedule and budget.

ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN 2017

Please give to our Annual Giving Campaign 2017! For 50 days, from now to October 31, our goal is to raise $50,000. Every little bit counts. 55 cents a day would amount to almost $100 over the course of our school year. If every family donates $100 or more, we would surpass our fundraising goal. Schedules given out at orientation were draft schedules. There could be changes. There will be lists posted around the school and also adults standing around campus holdings lists, directing students to their first period class. Once they are in their first period class, they will get a copy of their official schedule. If a student was unable to come and get their ID picture taken prior to the first day of school, they need to go to class and we will make an announcement letting them know when they can come to get their ID. This will NOT be done on the first day.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

1. School ID on lanyard.
2. Class schedule and map of campus.
3. Sharpened pencils and erasers (mistakes OK!!).
4. Lunch or meal card or cash to purchase.
5. Binder with paper inside.
6. Backpack to hold it all!
7. Some returning students report they used a composition book for each class. You may need a 5-tab binder with pockets to hold handouts. Teachers will tell students what is required for class. If you buy ahead, save the receipt in case a teacher changes it up.
8. You do not change for P.E. on the first day.

DROP OFFS AND PICK UPS

Drop off and pick up students at the marked, designated areas on Norvell and Lawrence. Drive around the school in a clockwise direction. For student safety, and to improve traffic flow, drop students on the school side of the street. Please do not drop off students directly in front of the school on Donal Avenue. In the mornings and afternoons, Donal Avenue is used by AC Transit and other buses, therefore, it must be kept clear so that the buses can make their stops.

PARKING

There is no parking on the school side of Donal Avenue. The school side of Donal Avenue must be kept clear for AC Transit and other bus use. Please park legally on Lawrence, Gladys or Norvell Streets.

Please respect our neighborhood and our neighbors. Please do not park in front of and block driveways …. even for a minute … and always follow traffic rules and regulations.

AC Transit

AC Transit runs dedicated routes to and from Richmond. These routes run only on school days Monday to Friday and the schedules are timed to match the hours of local schools and operate only when schools are in session. MATH CLUB

Math Club is a lunchtime activity where students get help with homework, play games and solve puzzles, and earn extra credit and have fun with math!

WriterCoach Connection

Become a WriterCoach Connection volunteer at Korematsu Middle School; get an inside look into middle school and feel good about strengthening public education in El Cerrito. KMS is on the upswing thanks to wonderful parents, community support, dedicated principals and teachers, a state-of-the art new campus and being a pilot program for many new innovative and exclusive programs.

WriterCoach Connection brings teams of trained volunteers to help students one-on-one with their classroom writing assignments. We provide all the training you’ll need to be a terrific coach. To reach our goal of one-one-one coaching (where the magic happens) we need 10 more coaches to start training. Please check out this two minute compelling video!

KOREMATSU MATH CLUB

LOVE TO SING?

FABULOUS! FREE! MUSIC! OPEN TO ALL! FREE CONCERT BY ECHS BAND – SUNDAY, AUGUST 13

Dear Band Families,

I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to attended my graduate conducting recital on Sunday, August 13th at 2pm in the ECHS Theater. This summer I will be completing my coursework for a master’s degree in music and in keeping with my instrumental conducting focus, my culminating project is graduate conducting recital. The event is FREE and in right in our backyard!

The programming is intended to show the versatility of music written for the wind ensemble. It includes the “Allegro” from Mozart’s Serenade No. 12 in C Minor, K338 (woodwind octet); Gabrieli’s Sonata Pian’e Forte (for two brass choirs); movements I and IV of Gounod’s Petite Symphonie in B flat (for nine wind instruments); and Sousa’s Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (for full wind ensemble). The program is short (around 35-45 minutes) and will be featuring current and former ECHS band students, which makes the recital even more special for me!

There will be a reception immediately following the recital sponsored by the Friends of El Cerrito Music. It would mean a lot to have you all in attendance and hope you’ll consider being there. If you plan on attending please let me know by responding to this email (to help with planning of the reception).

FREE SOCCER REFEREE COURSE

The Alameda-Contra Costa Youth Soccer League (ACCYSL) is offering its only referee training course of the summer on August 25-27 at the Blue Barn (4th St. and Harrison) in Berkeley. The class is free to all members of ACCYSL soccer clubs (Mavericks, Mersey, Richmond United, San Pablo United).

Participants in the class need to be 13 years-old or older.

The Korematsu Annual Ice Cream Social will be held on August 19th from 3:00 – 5:00, in front of the Castro Clubhouse 1420 Norvell Street, El Cerrito, CA, right around the corner from Korematsu.

This free, fun event is open to all incoming and returning students and their families and siblings. It is a great opportunity to catch up with classmates and meet new friends before school starts the following week.

NEW AFTER-SCHOOL DRAMA PROGRAM

Korematsu will have a new after-school drama program this year! Ms. La Due is looking for interested parent volunteers to help, especially with costumes and sets. To start things off, she is looking for parents who are available to come in and help sort through and organize old costumes and props on Wednesday, August 16th at 10am. The Richmond Museum of History is hosting a FAMILY FREE DAY on Saturday, September 2, 2017 in honor of Back to School season! Dear Band Families,

I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to attended my graduate conducting recital on Sunday, August 13th at 2pm in the ECHS Theater. This summer I will be completing my coursework for a master’s degree in music and in keeping with my instrumental conducting focus, my culminating project is graduate conducting recital. The event is FREE and in right in our backyard!

The programming is intended to show the versatility of music written for the wind ensemble. It includes the “Allegro” from Mozart’s Serenade No. 12 in C Minor, K338 (woodwind octet); Gabrieli’s Sonata Pian’e Forte (for two brass choirs); movements I and IV of Gounod’s Petite Symphonie in B flat (for nine wind instruments); and Sousa’s Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (for full wind ensemble). The program is short (around 35-45 minutes) and will be featuring current and former ECHS band students, which makes the recital even more special for me! 

There will be a reception immediately following the recital sponsored by the Friends of El Cerrito Music. It would mean a lot to have you all in attendance and hope you’ll consider being there. If you plan on attending please let me know by responding to this email (to help with planning of the reception).

FREE SOCCER REFEREE COURSE

The Alameda-Contra Costa Youth Soccer League (ACCYSL) is offering its only referee training course of the summer on August 25-27 at the Blue Barn (4th St. and Harrison) in Berkeley.  The class is free to all members of ACCYSL soccer clubs (Mavericks, Mersey, Richmond United, San Pablo United).
Participants in the class need to be 13 years-old or older.

FREE DEBATE CAMP

JULY 31 TO AUGUST 4, LANEY COLLEGE

My name is Mya Whitaker and I am the program director for the Bay Area Urban Debate League. Last year BAUDL expanded to serve WCCUSD, starting policy debate teams at Richmond and Kennedy High School. With the success of these teams, Richmond winning the entire Novice division for 2017, we would like to invite more of Richmond to our annual debate camp. This is year 10 of us hosting the Julia Burke Debate Camp.

Julia Burke Debate camp is hosted July 31st- August 4th at Laney College from 9am-4pm. Camp is free for WCCUSD youth ages 6th-12th grade. We provide FREE breakfast and lunch, as well as reimburse students for their travels.At debate camp we teach students the foundation of debate, as well as help them prepare for the upcoming season with us. We would like to come to any events your office is hosting this summer to bring more awareness to your community.

JOIN THE CONGRESSIONAL APP CHALLENGE!

Are you a young programmer? Do you live in the 11th Congressional District? Read on from Rep. Mark DeSaulnier!

The challenge will run from July 26, 2017 to November 1, 2017. All eligible high school students who live or attend school in California’s 11th Congressional District are invited to design, create, and submit their own software application for any platform (mobile, web, desktop, etc.).

Below is a summary of the Congressional App Challenge Rules:
Students may compete as individuals or in teams of up to four.
Submissions must be original, and created within one calendar year of the closing of the submission period.
Students entering the competition must submit a short video demonstration explaining their app and a completed questionnaire online by 12:00 p.m. EST on November 1, 2017.
Submissions will be judged by a panel of local judges who work within the academic, software, and entrepreneurial fields. The winning app will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol exhibit and featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website.
Established in 2013 by Members of Congress, this competition is intended to engage students’ creativity and encourage participation in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. By recognizing our nation’s young programming talent, we hope to highlight the growing importance of these skills to the future of our country.
