KOREMATSU ULTIMATE FRISBEE TEAM DID US PROUD!

The Korematsu Ultimate Frisbee team placed 2nd in the 1st division of the State Championships on May 6th. Congratulations to KORE Ultimate!

 

GREAT AMERICA FIELD TRIP ON PHYSICS, MATH & SCIENCE DAY

From Mr. Jackson Lee:

On May 5th, 55 students and 8 chaperones went to California’s Great America for Physics, Math, and Science Day. Students competed in project building contests that had an emphasis on STEM. It was the ultimate test of critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. I believe a significantly-supported, strong project-based learning curriculum is important.

I am very proud of my group – Kai S., Michael K., Gabriel M., and Tino E. for their performance in the Cardboard Boat Race which resulted in 3rd place against some of the top high schools and middle schools across the Bay Area. Shout out to Kai for his creativity in designing a cardboard boat that turned into a PFD (personal flotation device) when water got inside, and to Tino for his performance in the race. All the hours they put in with me after school paid off.

Special thanks to the PTSA, Ms. Tiffany Jamison, and Ms. Tanise Smith for supporting Mr. Douglas and I to make this happen!

I wanted to let all of you know how thankful I am to work at this school, and for the amazing students and families I get to work with every day. I have been incredibly honored to receive the Teaching Excellence award this year — it is wonderful to be recognized, but more than that, it is a reminder of how much love and support there is in the Korematsu community. I am deeply appreciative of it.

Sadly, I am unable to attend this Friday’s Soaring to Excellence Celebration where they will be honoring the award recipients, which is why I wanted to send out this note to all of you. Friday is opening night of the play that I am currently acting in, The Elephant Man at Altarena Playhouse, which is a commitment I cannot miss, no matter how much I would love to be at the EdFund event with all of you. Please forgive my absence, and know that I am extremely grateful for your never-ending support! It has been an amazing three years for me at Korematsu, and I’m already looking forward to meeting next year’s 7th graders!

KOREMATSU AT PEACE AND UNITY CINCO DE MAYO PARADE: SATURDAY, MAY 6

Korematsu will celebrate Mexican culture at the Cinco de Mayo parade in Richmond this Saturday! Korematsu students AND parents, come march with the band in this fun event. Email Ms. Soto at ysoto@wccusd.net . The plan is to meet Ms. Soto and Ms. Carrico at the Richmond Civic Center at 24th Street and Barrett at 9:30 AM. If you have Korematsu spirit wear or t-shirts in Korematsu’s colors of gold and red, wear them!

Or just come out and support our parade participants! The parade starts at the Richmond Civic Center and travels north on 23rd Street, turns right on Market Ave, and ends at St. Paul Church, 1835 Church Lane in San Pablo. The parade is followed by a festival with performances, music, food, games, and much more. Admission is free.

A group of our students will represent Korematsu Middle School in Richmond’s Cinco de Mayo parade! Come out and support them!

The parade will begin at Richmond Civic Center at 24th Street and Barrett. It travels north on 23rd Street, turns right on Market Ave, and ends at St. Paul Church, 1835 Church Lane in San Pablo. The parade is followed by a festival with performances, music, food, games, and much more. Admission is free.

SBAC CONTINUES

Students will continue sitting for the SBAC tests. Please remind students to work hard and do their best. It’s also very important for students to try to get enough sleep and eat a healthy breakfast.

The PTSA is proud to sponsor snacks and water for all students during the testing period. Many thanks to Clif Bar for also helping to support Korematsu students.

EARTH DAY FUNDRAISER AT FLOWERLAND: SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, APRIL 22 & 23

In honor of Earth Day, Flowerland, a garden center located at 1330 Solano Ave, Albany, has generously offered 10% of their proceeds back to local schools! This means ALL weekend any purchase made in honor of OUR school will earn us money!! All you have to do is MENTION OUR SCHOOL name PRIOR TO CHECK OUT so we get credit.

Flowerland is a locally-owned business so not only do you support a community member, you also support your child’s school!

STILL LOOKING FOR NEXT YEAR’S LEADERS

We are recruiting chairs for: Fright Write, College + Career Week, and Rights + Respect Week

If you like writing, consider chairing the Fright Write writing contest next year. It’s Korematsu’s tradition to hold a creative writing and art contest with a Halloween theme every October. As chair, you coordinate a team of volunteer judges who will read and review original stories written by our students.

It’s never too early to open our students’ eyes to what lies beyond middle school and high school. Try coordinating the College + Career Week, usually held in October, which includes a series of lunchtime career talks.

As coordinator of Rights + Respect Week, usually held in February, you will organize events that allow students to ponder and discuss the breakthroughs and setbacks in the progression of civil rights in this country, as well as contemplate respect as a cultural value.

ALL-DISTRICT JAZZ FESTIVAL: THURSDAY, APRIL 20, ECHS THEATER, 7 PM

This event showcases the growing number of middle and high school jazz groups around the district. Korematsu’s Jazz Ensemble will perform, as will the ECHS Jazz Ensemble and a number of other area groups. Come support our Jazz Ensemble!

The West Contra Costa Unified School District will host the 4th annual Best Practices Conference on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 6 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at Dejean Middle School. SBAC TESTING STARTS ON APRIL 18

Students will sit for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) tests over eight days starting Monday, April 18. Students will generally test in first period classes, from 8:30-11 AM.

Before Spring Break, students received a brochure that contains their test scores from the past two years. The school has asked students to set goals and share those with their parents.

Doing well on the SBAC tests is important. It will help teachers know how much a student has learned. If the scores indicate “Exceeded” or “Met Standard” then the student will know that he or she has mastered that subject area according to California’s standards. High enough scores can assure the student’s placement in appropriate courses that him or her you on track for future academic success and college acceptance.

A Message From Principal Matthew Burnham:

Beginning in April, all students at Korematsu Middle School will take the SBAC tests. You are probably familiar with these tests since you have been taking them for several years. This is the test you have been taking on computers or tablets.

What you might not know is why the tests are important. The SBAC measures how well students are learning compared to students in other schools in California.

Your SBAC scores are a reflection of yourself and your community. The scores of Korematsu students will be compared with other schools in the district.

The SBAC tests are the perfect opportunity to show off what you know.

The SBAC scores of all students at Korematsu are a big factor in determining our school’s overall performance. Every student counts and every correct answer counts. If every Phoenix gives 100% during SBAC testing, our group efforts will lead to success!

What Can Students Do?

Everyone’s efforts count. As a student, you can do a number of things to help reach your goal.

Take a look at some of these ideas:
1. Make sure to get enough sleep before testing. Getting a good night’s sleep and being well-rested before testing can make a big difference in helping you give your best effort.

2. Eat a healthy, nutritious breakfast on the days you test. This will give you energy and help you think clearly.

3. Talk to your parents about the tests you will be taking. Share your personal testing goals and let them know how important your scores are for helping you succeed.

4. Make sure you study hard and ask your teachers if you have questions about what is likely to be on the test.

Warriors Basketball Camp, powered by Under Armour, will be offering a special one day Girls Skills Clinic at Walnut Creek Intermediate School on Saturday, May 6. The four hour clinic is for girls, ages 7-15, of all skill levels and abilities. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the game, improve their skills and hear from two WNBA Legends and Olympic Gold Medalists – Ruthie Bolton and Jennifer Azzi.

UC BERKELEY GIRLS IN ENGINEERING SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITY

All Bay Area girls who are currently in 5th, 6th, or 7th grade are invited to apply to the UC Berkeley Girls in Engineering Summer Camps. They’ve also extended the deadline for scholarship applicants (full scholarships!).

Families are automatically awarded full scholarships if they demonstrate financial need (by qualifying for free or reduced price lunch, CalFresh, or Medi-Cal). All girls need to complete the normal camp application, but no additional scholarship application is required.

In the summer of 2017 there will be four camp sessions:

Learn more about A-G requirements, the block system, and life at ECHS at the ECHS info night tonight. It’s held in the ECHS Performing Arts Theater.

ECHS also hosts parent tours every third Thursday of the month. The tours will be from 9 to 11 AM. “OUTSPOKEN” AT KOREMATSU: FRIDAY, MARCH 31

Korematsu students will enjoy a special assembly this Friday. YouthAware, a program by San Francisco-based New Conservatory Theater Center, will perform “OUTSPOKEN,” a youth-centered play on identity and diversity. Here’s a description of the play: “OUTSPOKEN,” by Prince Gomolvilas, builds on San Francisco Unified School District diversity curricula to help start productive, solution-focused conversations on the identity and diversity issues facing most schools. In fast-paced scenes and monologues, engaging characters present varied perspectives to help teens examine stereotypes, labels, self-esteem, peer pressure, identity, and respect for differences in their own peer groups. HERE’S A NEW CHALLENGE: READING WITHOUT WALLS

From now until May 10th, our students are encouraged to do the “Reading Without Walls” challenge by: reading a book about a character who doesn’t look like them or live like them; reading a book about a topic they don’t know much about, and reading a book in a format that they don’t normally read for fun.

The main goal is for kids to try reading outside their comfort zone to build empathy and gain new knowledge. They need to read at least one book and submit a confirmation to Ms. Bogie in order to qualify for the ice cream party and raffle.

Woohoo!!! Korematsu students grabbed prizes at the Intel-affiliated Contra Costa County Science and Engineering Fair at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, CA, this past weekend.

RYSE PRESENTS RICHMOND RENAISSANCE – MARCH 6 & 7, ECHS PERFORMING ARTS THEATER, 6-8 PM

RYSE will debut its third annual production, Richmond Renaissance, this May. Written and performed by Richmond youth, the play is set in AnnaBelle’s, a Black-owned juke joint in 1940s North Richmond, where history’s Blues and roots of love inspire communal growth. Our multimedia theatrical performance will counter the traditional Richmond narrative of poverty and violence by highlighting the community’s wealthy cultural past as an epicenter for blues, jazz, and zydeco. KOREMATSU CLINCHES TOP SPOT IN DISTRICT SPELLING BEE

Korematsu won the District Spelling Bee once more! After going through 15 rounds, eighth grader Ghouran C. placed first, while Jacob K. came in third place. The second spot was taken by Pinole. The winning word — riotous. Kudos to all spelling bee participants! And go Korematsu!!!

The PTSA and band have been given another date to work a Dollar Day at the Golden Gate Fields. Please consider volunteering at this fun-raiser! We serve hot dogs and beer, (and sneak off to place a few bets). Your PTSA AND the band program will earn $1,000 + tips.

PTSA MEETING FEATURING SPECIAL SESSION “LOOKING AHEAD: WHAT TO EXPECT AT ECHS” AND BAND PARENTS MEETING

TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 7 PM, MULTI PURPOSE ROOM

How does the block system work? What electives, sports, and club activities are offered? How will the high school prepare my child for college? What kind of academic support is available at the school?

These are just some of the questions that will be answered in the special session on ECHS at the next PTSA meeting on Tuesday, March 14. After covering PTSA business briefly, we will invite ECHS Principal Edith Jordan-McCormick and Assistant Principal Jay Eirvin to talk about academic and administrative matters, as well as extra curricular programs at the high school. The session is organized along the lines of “what to expect,” which is specially designed to help 8th graders and their families navigate their way through the first few months of high school.

Learn also about what it’s like to be a Gaucho from our panel of student speakers coming from freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes.

ALL, INCLUDING STUDENTS, ARE WELCOME!

Preceding the PTSA meeting is the Band Parents meeting in the band room, starting at 6 PM.

KOREMATSU SHINES AGAIN AT DISTRICT SCIENCE FAIR

Congratulations to Korematsu students for their great performance this year’s District Science Fair. We had five 1st Place winners who received $50 as well as an engraved medal (the engraving was done in the district Fab Lab!) with their names, and an impressive list of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners. Special mention to Josephine F. for receiving the Hal Magarian Special Award for her project titled “Breaking Down Protein with Fruit.”

Nine judges reviewed each poster using the following criteria: purpose of the experiment; quality of science (experimental design, data collection, and discussion of results); and presentation.

SAVE THE DATES: EL CERRITO HIGH SCHOOL INFO TOURS EVERY THIRD THURSDAY OF MARCH AND APRIL 9 TO 11 AM

El Cerrito High School will host parent tours every third Thursday of the month the next two months. The tours will be from 9 to 11 AM. The tour will start with a question and answer period with Principal McCormick and end with classroom visits lead by Leadership students. Please check in at the main office. With 8th grade promotion only three months away, it’s time to plan the promotion activities this year. ECHS SIXTH ANNUAL SWING DANCE SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 6:30 PM, EC COMMUNITY CENTER

Everyone’s welcome to participate in the Sixth Annual Swing Dance, which is a fundraiser for the band program. The evening includes great appetizers, a group dance lesson, and live swing-era music performed by ECHS Jazz Ensemble and Workshop.
