HERE’S A NEW CHALLENGE: READING WITHOUT WALLS
From now until May 10th, our students are encouraged to do the “Reading Without Walls” challenge by: reading a book about a character who doesn’t look like them or live like them; reading a book about a topic they don’t know much about, and reading a book in a format that they don’t normally read for fun.
The main goal is for kids to try reading outside their comfort zone to build empathy and gain new knowledge. They need to read at least one book and submit a confirmation to Ms. Bogie in order to qualify for the ice cream party and raffle.

Woohoo!!! Korematsu students grabbed prizes at the Intel-affiliated Contra Costa County Science and Engineering Fair at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, CA, this past weekend.

With more than half of our board members moving on to high school next year, we are actively recruiting our next generation of leaders. Please consider taking on a leadership position in the PTSA. Two of the positions still open for next year are president and treasurer; without these positions filled by mid-May, we will not have a PTSA next year.
At Korematsu, the PTSA does everything from organizing assemblies to Teacher Treat Days. We administer classroom grants, contract with a math tutor and an after school library supervisor, fund field trips and academic contests, and so much more. We would like to see the work we’ve been doing continue and expand.
Support the school, lend your varied talents, meet fellow parents and guardians, and spend some time on campus with students, teachers and staff. It really is an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

A FEW MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: GOLDEN GATE FIELDS ON MARCH 26
Thank you so much to those who have already signed up to volunteer on the Golden Gate Fields’ Dollar Day. We still need a handful of people to work on Sunday, March 26. Please consider volunteering at this fun-raiser! We serve hot dogs and beer, (and sneak off to place a few bets). Your PTSA AND the band program will earn $1,000 + tips.
SAVE THE DATES: EL CERRITO HIGH SCHOOL INFO NIGHT AND TOURS
El Cerrito High School will host parent tours every third Thursday of the month the next two months. The tours will be from 9 to 11 AM. The tour will start with a question and answer period with Principal McCormick and end with classroom visits lead by Leadership students. Please check in at the main office. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school at 510-231-1437.
The high school is also planning an info night at the ECHS theater on March 30 from 6 to 8 PM.
KOREMATSU AT THE 52ND WCCUSD ART SHOW

Catch the works of student artists from Korematsu Middle School at the 52nd WCCUSD Art Show. The show will take place at Richmond Art Center’s Community Gallery, located at 2540 Barrett Ave, Richmond, CA, and is open from 11 AM to 5 PM from Tuesday to Saturday.
On Thursday, April 13, 2017, from 5 to 7 PM, there will be a reception celebrating the show. It is free and open to the public.

Please join the El Cerrito Speech & Debate Team for an evening extravaganza! Debate will be demonstrating their talents, while Speech will provide laughter, heartache, and unbridled energy as team members perform their award-winning monologues and dialogues, concentrating classic and contemporary literature and plays to just a few minutes each. This will be our 3rdAnnual Speech Showcase, and the only public performance of these pieces!

RYSE PRESENTS RICHMOND RENAISSANCE – MARCH 6 & 7, ECHS PERFORMING ARTS THEATER, 6-8 PM
RYSE will debut its third annual production, Richmond Renaissance, this May. Written and performed by Richmond youth, the play is set in AnnaBelle’s, a Black-owned juke joint in 1940s North Richmond, where history’s Blues and roots of love inspire communal growth. Our multimedia theatrical performance will counter the traditional Richmond narrative of poverty and violence by highlighting the community’s wealthy cultural past as an epicenter for blues, jazz, and zydeco. Please come and support this youth-led ode to the City of Pride and Purpose!

PLANNING FOR SUMMER?
Now is the time to start exploring options for your student for this summer. Here are some programs to think about:
El Cerrito Swim Center Spring Break Junior Lifeguard Camp for students ages 13-14 (by June 12th). Students who complete the camp can apply to volunteer at the Swim Center during the Summer. Scholarships are available for the camp. Flyer.
UC BERKELEY GIRLS IN ENGINEERING SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITY
All Bay Area girls who are currently in 5th, 6th, or 7th grade are invited to apply to the UC Berkeley Girls in Engineering Summer Camps. They’ve also extended the deadline for scholarship applicants (full scholarships!).
Families are automatically awarded full scholarships if they demonstrate financial need (by qualifying for free or reduced price lunch, CalFresh, or Medi-Cal). All girls need to complete the normal camp application, but no additional scholarship application is required.
In the summer of 2017 there will be four camp sessions:
- June 19–23
- June 26–30
- July 10–14
- July 17–21

FREE IMMIGRATION CLINIC – KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Jubilee Immigration Advocates is hosting a Free Immigration Clinic & Know-Your Rights presentations on Saturday, March 25th, 9am-1pm in partnership with New Hope Covenant Church and Harbor House Ministries. The clinic will be held at the Youth Employment Partnership at 2300 International Blvd. in Oakland. We are encouraging folks who want an attorney consultation to pre-register.
