DONATE TO SUPPORT PROGRAMS

We make a real difference in the programs and services that can be offered at Korematsu. We spend more than $40,000 per year on many campus extras. We’ve employed a math tutor, we’ve paid for the track, cross country and drama programs. We’ve paid for field trips. Every teacher at Korematsu gets $400 to spend on classroom supplies. If every family gave $100, we’d have more than enough to provide for our needs. You can set up monthly donations using the Paypal link on our website: www.korematsumiddleschool.org

Come Visit our table at registration where you can find out what we do and volunteer. We welcome you!!!

It’s a WRAP!

Unnamed
THANK YOU to all of our volunteers, our outgoing 8th grade parents, the boards of our PTSA and Korematsu’s Music Parents Association. We couldn’t have done it without you. Whether you volunteered in classrooms, volunteered for an extracurricular, worked for the WriterCoach Connection, went on a field trip, contributed to Teacher Treat Day, worked on the yearbook, volunteered for one of our band programs, coached sports, or helped your child with homework, you made (and make) our school a better place. We can never say enough good things about this kind, caring and generous community. We are very lucky!

Good luck to our 8th graders as you move on to high school. We are expecting great things from you, and know you will change your communities and the world for the better!!

Oh yeah…. the first day of school is Monday, August 19, 2019! It is a minimum day.

We will publish registration and incoming 7th grade information very shortly. We do publish over the summer.

WE NEED YOU!

Both the Korematsu PTSA and Korematsu Music Parents Association are in need of board leadership and volunteers for the 2019-2020 school year. These are important positions, because we really do support the school with additional funds, programs and opportunities for students and teachers. Your involvement is really important. We really do make a better school!

Please look over these opportunities and seriously consider giving some of your time. These are not overwhelming time commitments. You make of it what you will. The community is wonderful. You will enjoy yourself, meet people and leave enriched. We promise!

As a reminder, if we do not have a PTSA President, both the music program and the programs PTA funds are in jeopardy. We’d be able to ride for a while, but it will catch up with us. This will mean no math tutoring, no teacher classroom grants, no etree, no funding for drama program, no money for sports and sports equipment, no money for field trips, no funding for 8th grade Field Day, No Celebrate Korematsu, and finally, no organized parent forum for community-building and information exchange. We’d also lose our insurance, as PTA provides insurance for all of our events. Please contact us! We’d love to talk to you. Contact: korematsuptsa@gmail.com

Here’s just a sampling of the opportunities available.

Korematsu PTSA President
Coordinate and oversee the unit’s activities. Plan the year’s calendar, approve the budget and along with the EVP, run five meetings a year.

Korematsu PTSA Vice President
Ideally be a 7th grade parent ready to be the president in 20/21. Along with the president, coordinate the unit’s activities – mainly Celebrate Korematsu. Plan the year’s calendar, approve the budget and along with the President, run five meetings a year.

Korematsu PTSA Membership Chair
Process PTSA memberships. Most of the work occurs in August and September. The work is largely online, and can be done from home.

Korematsu Teacher Treat Day Coordinator(s) – Coordinates monthly teacher luncheon. Use email to solicit donations of food and volunteers. Set up staffing schedule.

Celebrate Korematsu Chair – Head up a team that collects and processes donations for the Celebrate Korematsu auction. The majority of the work is December/January.

Incoming School Mixer/Ice Cream Social Chair – Welcome new and returning families to Korematsu by chairing the August Ice Cream Social. Ensure we have treats on hand, promote the event through the e tree.

Back-to-School Picnic – Welcome new and returning families to Korematsu by chairing the Back-to-School picnic. Order food, gather volunteers, promote the event through the e tree.

Korematsu Volunteer Coordinator – Find volunteers to staff events.

Korematsu E Tree Editor – Do you like to write? Work to write this weekly newsletter.

Golden Gate Fields Coordinator – Contact Golden Gate Fields to secure at Dollar Days Date, promote event to ensure enough volunteers are on hand, attend event and assure its smooth running.

Cookie Dough Coordinator – Run Fall Cookie Dough Fundraising Campaign. Contact Vendor, pass out and collect forms, organize the distribution of product when it arrives.

Restaurant Night Coordinator – Contact area restaurants and arrange “Restaurant Night” events. Promoted the events through the etree.

Science Fair Coordinators – Work with the science teachers to grade science projects and plan Korematsu’s science night. Order awards if necessary. Assist when projects move to District, County and State science fairs.

Yearbook – Work with Korematsu staff and teachers to produce the yearbook. Advertise various deadlines to the school community.

2019-2020 KMPA Open Board Positions

We are in need of 4 volunteers to fill the following band positions for the upcoming school year. Please consider volunteering your time to the KMPA Band Board. It doesn’t take a lot of time and most of the work can be done in the evenings from home. The following positions need to be filled:

Chair
Treasurer
Financial Secretary
Jazz Ensemble E-Tree

Now is a great time to shadow the current volunteer! If you know of an incoming 7th grade family that would be interested in volunteering, please send them my way. We cannot continue with the amazing work that we do without volunteers! Please contact nancykawase@hotmail.com for more information.

Korematsu Scientists – Place in Statewide Championship!

Unnamed 1
For the first time in many years, WCCUSD won medals in the California Science and Engineering Fair. Korematsu’s Eleanor Addison and Nora Thompson took home 3rd and 4th place medals respectively, competing against the top 800 student finalists from regional fairs across the state. Held at the California Science Center in Los Angeles on April 29-30th, the event opened with an inspiring lecture by the 2018 Nobel Laureate, Dr. Frances Arnold. The following morning our young scientists stood for 5 hours of grueling interviews by roving teams of judges.

Congratulations to our winners — we hope this inspires a new generation of Korematsu students to enter next year’s science fair.

NEW TECHNOLOGY COMING!

This summer, the District is purchasing and/or refurbishing all student tablets. In August students will return to newer, faster and more secure devices! YAY!

In order to accomplish this, all student tablets will be collected before the last day of school on June 7th. (Your principal or school administration team will communicate the specific collection plan for your particular school.)

Remind your student to prepare for collection with this one step:

● If there are files stored on the tablet’s hard drive or their H:\ drive, please remind your student to move those files to Google Drive before tablet collection, so that they can be accessed from the new device. Once tablets are collected, anything stored on the hard drive of the computer will not be retrievable. Some computers will be retired and some will be completely refurbished. Your student will not get the same machine back.

Also know:

● Students will take a tablet home if they have an IEP that specifically calls for a tablet.
● Summer schools will have devices. Seniors doing independent study will be able to take them home.

Thanks for your support in the transition!

SBAC Testing Starts Monday, April 22, 2019

Unnamed

The SBAC testing season is upon us. While the SBAC is not the only measure of student success, it is an important indicator for our students, our school and our school district. We encourage all to take it seriously.

Unnamed

Here are some important reminders:

  • Please have students bring their tablets and chargers with tablets fully charged. The test is taken on the tablet.
  • If, for some reason, students are not routinely bringing tablets to school, please have them bring the tablets because tablets might need software updates, and the updates can only be done at school.
  • Please have students bring headphones if they have them.
  • Students should bring home SBAC brochures, where they recorded the testing targets they hope to reach. Ask your student about it, and review it together.
  • Please schedule all non-emergency appointments (Dr. dentist, etc.) after school hours so that all students can test.
  • Please make an extra effort to have students show up on time.
  • Students should eat a good breakfast prior to the test and get a good night’s sleep.
  • These efforts will help to make the testing period smooth and orderly.
  • Thank you for your help!

Only a Few Yearbooks Left!

We have nearly sold out of all our yearbooks. Online sales are now closed, but a very small number of yearbooks are still available for sale in the Korematsu office. Yearbooks will be distributed at the end of May.

Thank you to everyone who purchased books. And thank you to all of the people who helped with this year’s book, and without whom it would not have been possible: to the students from the DECA yearbook club (and beyond), who helped with the theme, cover art, and gathering of photos; to the parents who submitted photos; to the PTSA, who have sent out emails and spread the word about photos; to the KMS office staff, who have taken orders, helped with photos, and fielded questions throughout the year; and to Jackson Lee, who was the faculty advisor this year, and who provided so much support to the students. Plea from Ms. La Due:

20190208 122825 resized

We are now in our final month of rehearsals for Fiddler on the Roof Jr., and we are in dire need of help with something: there is a “cart” we need to pick up and rent from Hayward. The shop is only open weekdays from 10am-3pm, so obviously that is a difficult (impossible, unless I get a sub) time for me to pick it up. Is there anyone who has the ability to go get it for us? I’ve attached a picture so you can see the size. Thank you in advance — if I don’t find someone to get it for us, I will probably have to take a sick day in order to drive and get it myself, which is not great for me or my students!

If you can help with this, please e-mail me at sarah.ladue@wccusd.net and I will give you all of the necessary information! Thank you!

Korematsu wins big at District and SF Bay Area Science Fairs

State championship in Los Angeles NEXT!

From psychology to computer programming, biology to physics, or math to engineering, each year with the coming of spring students across the country tackle science projects.

From the District Fair

The science fair has a long tradition in the West Contra Costa Schools, and Korematsu sent a large contingent of winners from our school fair onward this year. Held at El Cerrito High, the annual WCC Science/STEM Fair had 141 students from eight middle and high schools attending. We did very well again in 2019, snagging 28 of the 75 ribbons, plus several Special Awards. Korematsu notably won half of all the first place prizes at this year’s District ceremony!

In 7th Grade at the District fair, First place awards went to Korematsu students: Meah Bauer, Eghosa Otokiti, and Sam Schweitzer. Second place winners included Taran Johnson, Amy Pebler, and Emilia Walker, with 3rd place prizes going to Drake Fillingim, Alma Hasley, Haroon Mishal, Gilbert Bade, Ana Lucia Elices , Matthew Parra, and Maeve Urban. And in 8th Grade, taking first place at the District were Rika Adam, Eleanor Addison, and Tess Roorda. Second place, prizes went to Grace Maguire, Deidre Miller, Cooper Matthews, Benjamin Pilling, Amelia Wardle Stacey, and Nora Thompson. Third place awards went to Theo Boyrs, Johan Phan, Sangye Richen, and Henry Warmerdam, while 4th place went to Liliana Arias Purcell and Mira Steinberg. Seventh graders Sam Schweitzer and Eghosa Otokiti, and eighth graders Tess Roorda and Rika Adam also received special prizes from Bio-Rad and $50 each, while Eleanor Addison received $75 and the Norm Seraphin Award, given in honor of a long-time El Cerrito science teacher.

To the Bay Area Fair

From almost 50,000 student projects at public and private middle and high schools spanning 9 Northern California counties, including San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin, Napa, Sonoma, Solano, Alameda, West Contra Costa and Mendocino, the top 300 Bay Area projects are picked annually to compete in the SF Bay Area Science Fair. Our 1st through 3rd place winners above at the District fair thus moved on to the Golden Gate STEM Fair (SF Bay Area Science Fair). At a packed awards ceremony on Saturday March 23rd at the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Bay Model in Sausalito, Korematsu had a strong presence. Competing against winners from across the bay region, 13 of our students took home prize ribbons:

1st (8th grade Biological) Eleanor Addison’s Sunscreen: Protection or Poison?
2nd (8th grade Biological) Nora Thompson’s Lights of the Sea
3rd (7th grade Physical) Meah Bauer’s How do animals keep warm in cold regions?
3rd (7th grade Engin/CS) Eghosa Otokiti’s Can you hear me now
3rd (8th grade Physical) Cooper Matthews’ Testing Bernoulli’s Principles of Water…
4th (7th grade Behavioral) Alma Hasley’s Do You Eat With Your Eyes?
4th (7th grade Physical) Amy Pebler’s Parachute for the Pool
4th (8th grade Biological) Rika Adam’s Hot, Cold, or Room Temperature
4th (8th grade Biological) Benjamin Pilling’s Flicker Fusion: LED Lighting and Age
4th (8th grade Engin/CS) Johan Phan’s Chess: Characteristics of random play
4th (8th grade Behavioral) Tess Roorda’s Does Facial Appearance Affect Perceived Traits?
4th (8th grade Biological) Amelia Wardle Stacey’s Plant Growth and Magnets

Eleanor and Nora also received special awards from NASA and NOAA respectively.

And on to the State

For the second year in a row, Korematsu will move on to compete with the top young scientists from 22 regional fairs across the state for over $75,000 in prizes. With support from the District our two top finishers, Eleanor Addison and Nora Thompson, along with one other student from West Contra Costa, travel to the 68th Annual California Science & Engineering Fair on Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, April 30 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

Congratulations to all our hard-working young scientists!
