KOREMATSU MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER BAND CAMP

KOREMATSU MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER BAND CAMP

MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT DUFFY LEADERSHIP CHANGE EL CERRITO HIGH SCHOOL

June 19, 2018

Dear ECHS Community,

I hope you are enjoying your summer break. I am writing to let you know that next year, there will be a new principal at El Cerrito High School. Edith Jordan-McCormick will be working in a different leadership position in the district. We will immediately undertake the process to select a new principal and I look forward to your participation in that process.

Meetings with parents, students and staff are scheduled for Monday, June 25th at ECHS. The staff meeting will take place at 4:30 pm in the library and a wider community meeting at 6 pm in the auditorium. If enough students are present, we will also make special time for them toward the end of the meeting.

These meetings will be specifically tailored around input regarding skills and competencies the community would be looking for in their next leader. The position will be posted on Wednesday and interviews will be planned for July 9 and July 10. The interview process will be community based, meaning that a few teachers, parents and community will be invited to participate in the process via stakeholder groups. Details of that process will be shared during the meetings and by email following the meeting.

Next year, El Cerrito High School will be supervised by two executive directors, Julio Franco and Anne Shin, as part of a shift to a Secondary Schools office to better support middle and high schools. Both of them are experienced principals and leaders in the District. You will have an opportunity to meet them later this summer.

The school is also hiring an additional vice principal. We will be interviewing for that position in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support and patience during these changes. I look forward to the continued success of the students and staff at El Cerrito High School.

In partnership,

Matthew Duffy
Superintendent

Matthew Duffy
Superintendente

EL CERRITO HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH & DEBATE TEAM

Unnamed 38th graders:
Thinking about joining the debate team at ECHS next year?

You can get a head start, and have fun, by attending a local debate camp this summer.

The Practice Space in El Cerrito is offering several debate camps taught by current and former ECHS coaches, including a debate intensive for two weeks in July, 8:30-3:30, Mon-Fri, from July 16-27, 2018.

More information is available here:
https://www.practice-space.org/events/competitive-debate-intensive/

The camp will be divided into newcomers and more experienced debaters.

If the dates don’t work for you, or you’re looking for a different experience, you can sign up for the general summer camps at the Practice Space, which will also cover basic debate skills.

Nature & Environment Day Camp

July 30 – August 3, 2018
9:00am – 3:00pm @ Camp Herms
1100 James Place, El Cerrito CA

Open to all students ages 12-17 years. — This event is not restricted to Scouts, but Scouts can earn merit badges at this camp.

Event Cost: $325 per participant

This day camp gives small groups of participants the opportunity to learn to think and work like a naturalist to fully appreciate a portion of our natural environment and the role of wise practices of land management, conservation, and restoration in securing a sustainable ecosystem for the future.

The day camp is centered at Camp Herms and nearby East Bay Regional Park lands. Participants will investigate the Wildcat Creek watershed and see for themselves how biotic and abiotic forces shape and change the watershed’s ecology.

This is an in-depth and hands-on way to learn from expert University of California instructors how to critically observe and scientifically study our natural environment. Participants will study insects, birds, plants, animals, water courses, micro-climates, and so much more.

Participants will be responsible for their own meals.

For applications and more information, go to:

http://www.mdscbsa.org/events/nature-environment-day-camp/

Applications will be accepted first-come, first-served. Application deadline July 1, 2018.

8th Grade Promotion Activities

Dear Korematsu Families,

8th Grade Promotion to High School is fast approaching, and so are our celebration events! Attached is a flyer that explains the remaining activities.

For those who have already signed up to help, thank you! For those who haven’t, there are still a few open slots that need your assistance. In particular, help is still needed tying ribbons to fake diplomas (we need to make 300 or so “fake” certificates this coming weekend), as well as a few volunteers to help pass out certificates after the ceremony. Contact Jenny Han (jentohan@gmail.com) if you have questions regarding either tasks.

Please note there will be a light reception immediately following the Promotion Ceremony. This will be a great opportunity for students to say farewell and take memorable pictures in a decorated photo area.
